Ponzio Pilato non è l’uomo del dubbio. Ha capito perfettamente perché un certo sistema di potere vuole liberarsi del Giusto. Sa bene qual è la verità (è dunque ancora più ipocrita la sua domanda: “quid est veritas?”).

Pilato non fa la verità perché non vuole perdere il suo piccolo pezzo di potere (che perderà, così come perderà la sua dignità e la vita vera. “Perché chi vuole salvare la propria vita, la perderà”, Mt 16,25).

Die Wahrheit tun

Pontius Pilatus ist kein Mann des Zweifels. Er hat genau verstanden, warum ein bestimmtes Machtsystem den Gerechten loswerden will. Er weiß sehr wohl, was die Wahrheit ist (umso heuchlerischer ist daher seine Frage: „quid est veritas?“).

Pilatus handelt nicht nach der Wahrheit, weil er sein kleines Stückchen Macht nicht verlieren will (er wird es verlieren, ebenso wie er seine Würde und das wahre Leben verlieren wird. „Denn wer sein Leben retten will, wird es verlieren“, Mt 16,25).

Doing the truth

Pontius Pilate is not a man of doubt. He understands perfectly why a certain system of power wants to get rid of the Righteous One. He knows full well what the truth is (which makes his question, “quid est veritas?”, all the more hypocritical).

Pilate does not do the truth because he does not want to lose his little bit of power (which he will lose, just as he will lose his dignity and his true life. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it”, Mt 16:25).
